COVID-19 rapid tests are on the rise. In addition to the well-known PCR test, there are more and more COVID-19 rapid tests such as antigen tests and the antibody test.
If you have complaints that could indicate COVID-19, you naturally want to know as soon as possible whether you are indeed infected with COVID-19 or not. This probably also applies if you have come into contact with someone who carries the virus.
Do you have complaints that fit the COVID-19 virus? Then the advice is to get tested. This has been possible for a long time through the well-known PCR test, where you must wait 48 hours for the result. Now we offer the COVID-19 rapid tests where you will receive a result within 15-20 minutes whether you are infected with the COVID-19 virus (SARS CoV-2) or not.

Why test for covid-19 yourself?
You can take a COVID-19 rapid test at home in the relaxed environment of your own home without having to leave the house. This can lower the threshold for a quick test. You also know the results quickly, without having to wait long for this.
The process is not difficult, and the result is easy to read, even by people without medical experience. It is comparable to a pregnancy test. Dashes appear and you can find out what one and two dashes mean in the package leaflet.
How does this work?
The antigen test and the antibody test do not have to be carried out in a laboratory and can therefore also be taken outside medical practices. For example at your home, at a school or in a company.
Before the test, just like in the PCR test, some moisture is removed from the nose and throat with a cotton swab. The cotton swab is mixed with a liquid. The test then gives the results in about fifteen minutes.
You use this COVID-19 self-test when you have no complaints but are unsure whether you have been infected. If you do have complaints, were close to someone with COVID-19 or are returning from a high-risk area, you cannot use these self-tests. In these cases, make a test appointment with your local institution for health.
What should you do with the test result?
Is the self-test result positive? Then you probably have COVID-19. Get into isolation and stay at home. Your housemates must also stay at home. Make an appointment immediately with a local health institution for for a retest, in order to have the positive result confirmed.
Is the self-test result negative? Then you probably do not have COVID-19. But beware, a negative test result is less reliable with a self-test than with a test taken at a local health institution. So stay careful and stick to the basic rules such as keeping your distance, washing your hands and staying at home in case of complaints. Stay extra careful around people of fragile health.
